Grace Wales Bonner is one of the few young designers who understands how to push boundaries intersecting black men, masculinity and fashion and her Fall/Winter 2018 offering is a testament to that trajectory.
Drawing inspiration from the universal Creole and his love of the sea, Bonner imagined what such a gentleman would wear during his voyages and back on the mainland.
“I thought about what it would be like to look at a place and the way people behave, but from a distance and after a long period of isolation,” Ms. Wales Bonner, 26, said backstage after the show. “I wondered what a Creole setting would look like as an outsider, but also an insider, one with a deep connection to the community he is watching.”
Her signature silhouette of long and lean, luscious wools and silks, impeccably tailored suiting and outerwear reigned supreme. Nautical pea and bomber jackets, present, were cropped and perfect for not so hot weather and trousers were long rise and provided a little wiggle room for those who desire a looser fit. Think 1940s Jacob Lawrence paintings for the 2018 influencer.
