Multiplatinum rapper Tyga, one of the leaders of Hollywood’s Young Rat Pack, poses and speak for an Yahoo! Style’s exclusive fashion spread.
Charming, talented and fashion forward are a few way to describe wordsmith Tyga. Posing for Yahoo! Style, the 26 year-old Compton native plays dress up in designer ensembles styled by Christopher Kim, groomed by Hee Soo and shot by Eric Ray Davidson. As versatile as each image, Tyga (which stands for “Thank You God Always”) quick changes into a number of designer looks, including Ports1961, Alexander Wang, Yves Salomon for Opening Ceremony and more, thus proving that the “Rack City” rapper is much more than the lyrics he spits or Kylie Jenner’s beau.
In a brief excerpt, Tyga talks to journalist Daniel Barna of his love of music, fashion and next career moves:
On early start in hip-hop:
“I recorded all my songs in my room, made beats on my own laptop, and I just did freestyles and never really played it for anybody but me and my friends,” he recalls. “Every day coming home from school it was all I wanted to do. I wasn’t doing homework, or going to the park to play basketball, or riding my bike. I just wanted to record.”
On musical style:
“Even though so many people are doing music, I still feel like what I do is not comparable. It can’t be duplicated. When you start looking at all the other people, that’s you losing your faith in what you’re supposed to do.”
On Last Kings clothing line:
“My clothes is all about the fit. The fit needs to be right.”
On being famous:
“It’s a gift and a curse,” Tyga says. “You can never really get used to people chasing you all day, but whether you’re an actor, a rapper, or an athlete, that’s the life you chose,” he adds. “You sacrifice your freedom.”
