While other designers were inspired by these idyllic and oftentimes mythical sagas this season, Umit Benan’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection is an ode to the ordinary gentleman. Perhaps borrowing from Wes Anderson’s 2004 feature The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Benan focused on the world of fishermen and their rugged attire to battle the brutal elements of working predominately outdoors. A more luxe approach was given to plaid double-breasted suiting, knit joggers, handwoven tops and even corduroy overalls in lush wools, cottons and tweeds. Rich hues of greens, blues, browns and mustard take center stage and help to create the seaside narrative. Outerwear like blouson jackets and raincoats are durable yet modern while practical accessories, of fishing rods and buckets, complete the Neo-Nautical look. These are not your ordinary fishermen sitting by the dock of the bay!
